Millie Bright, the iconic Chelsea FC captain and England national team center-back, has announced her immediate retirement from professional football at 32 years old. The decision, made after being sidelined this season due to injury, marks the end of a remarkable career for one of the sport's most decorated defenders.
Bright joined Chelsea FC in 2015 and became the club's all-time appearance leader with 314 matches. During her illustrious 12-year tenure, she secured an impressive eight Women's Super League titles, including six consecutively, alongside six FA Cups and four League Cups, solidifying her legacy at the club.
Beyond her Chelsea achievements, Bright holds the record for most Women's Super League appearances by any player, with 216 league games. For England, she earned 88 caps, scoring six goals, and was a pivotal figure for the Lionesses on the international stage.
A centerpiece of England's historic Euro 2022 victory on home soil, Bright started all six matches as the team clinched their first-ever major trophy. She famously captained the England women's national team during their 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup final appearance against Spain, following Leah Williamson's injury, joining Bobby Moore as the only England captains to lead their country in a World Cup final.
In a club statement, Bright expressed her gratitude: "Representing Chelsea over the last 12 years has been everything to me, but I'm now ready to say goodbye to playing football. I've given all I can, and I never wanted to fight for any other badge." Chelsea FC plans to honor her during their final game on May 16 against Manchester United.
