Chelsea FC have kicked off their summer transfer activities by exploring options for a new defender. The club is expected to be one of the most active teams in the Premier League this summer, especially with Xabi Alonso set to take over managerial duties from July 1. While Chelsea FC's primary focus has been on acquiring a midfielder and a striker, recent reports from Italy indicate that they have also opened discussions regarding a right-back. According to Sky Sports Italia, Chelsea FC has made contact with the agent of Marco Palestra, a 21-year-old defender from Atalanta. Palestra spent the previous season on loan at Cagliari, where he became a key player, starting 34 Serie A matches. With three years remaining on his contract, Atalanta is in a strong financial position and is reportedly demanding at least £43 million for Palestra. If Chelsea FC meets this asking price, the young right-back would rank among the club's top four record transfers. However, questions arise regarding the necessity of this signing, given that Reece James recently extended his contract and Malo Gusto offers solid backup. Additionally, Chelsea FC's failure to qualify for European football next season raises concerns about financial management. It remains uncertain whether Palestra would even prefer a move to Stamford Bridge, as he reportedly wishes to stay in Italy and join Inter Milan instead. Since his promotion to Atalanta's first team in 2024, Palestra has made 16 senior appearances across all competitions, contributing to the team's success in the 2023-24 UEFA Europa League.
