Chelsea FC's new shirt sponsorship deal has created unexpected legal uncertainty for supporters in Hong Kong. The Premier League club signed an agreement with Circle to feature its USDC stablecoin brand on player jerseys for the 2026-27 season, a move reported by the South China Morning Post Sport this week.
Circle UK Trading is a company regulated by the UK's Financial Conduct Authority for certain financial services. The deal was finalized in late August. That was three months after the FCA warned Premier League clubs about partnering with unauthorised crypto and finance businesses.
Why are Hong Kong fans concerned?
The concern stems from Hong Kong's Stablecoins Ordinance. The Hong Kong Monetary Authority warned on August 1, 2025, that marketing unlicensed fiat-referenced stablecoins to the public will be illegal under this law. USDC is not issued or regulated under UK laws. It is also not distributed by a licensed stablecoin issuer in Hong Kong.
Currently, only two stablecoin issuers are licensed in Hong Kong: Anchorpoint Financial Limited and HSBC. This regulatory gap means the Chelsea jersey, which prominently features the USDC logo, could be seen as marketing an unlicensed product. Winnie Choi, a Chelsea fan of 12 years, expressed her worry. "After looking up the law, I still do not understand whether it is a problem to wear the jersey," she said.
How does this affect Chelsea's season?
The sponsorship controversy arrives as Chelsea builds momentum on the pitch. The team currently sits 4th in the Premier League with 6 points from 3 games, having won two and lost one. Their recent form reads LWW. They have scored 8 goals and conceded 7, giving them a +1 goal difference. They trail leaders Manchester City by 3 points in the early title race.
You can track their progress in the standings throughout the campaign. The club's next challenge is a home fixture against Hull City on September 12. Hull currently occupies 3rd place, setting up a significant early-season clash. Fans can check the full fixtures schedule for the rest of the season.
What is the broader context for the club?
This off-field issue highlights the complex intersection of global sport, finance, and regional law. While the sponsorship is a commercial agreement for the London-based club, its visual impact travels worldwide with fans. The situation is unique because it involves a regulated entity in one jurisdiction (Circle UK) promoting a product (USDC) that falls under different rules in another.
For Chelsea, the focus quickly returns to football. The squad, which you can view in detail on our squad page, will be preparing for the Hull City match. Securing three points at home is vital to keep pace at the top of the table. The team hosts Hull City at Stamford Bridge on September 12.
