Chelsea FC have finalised the sale of striker Liam Delap to Nottingham Forest in a transfer that sets a new club-record fee for the Midlands side. The deal, understood to be worth at least £45 million with potential add-ons taking it to £50 million, sees the Blues make a substantial profit on a player they signed only last summer.
Delap, 23, has put pen to paper on a five-year contract at the City Ground, bringing a swift end to his time at Stamford Bridge. "I really can't wait to get started," the forward said in a club statement. "I spoke to the manager and I like his way."
Business acumen pays off
From a financial perspective, the move represents a major success for Chelsea's transfer strategy. The club paid a reported £30 million to activate a release clause in Delap's contract at Ipswich Town following their relegation in the summer of 2025. After a difficult season in which he managed just three goals in 47 appearances across all competitions, the Blues have now recouped that initial outlay and stand to make a profit of up to £20 million.
His departure follows a campaign where he struggled to establish himself as a regular starter, with his final contribution for Chelsea coming in a late substitute appearance against Manchester City in May. A fresh start for Delap
Delap's move offers him a chance to reignite a career that showed such promise during his time at Portman Road. He scored 12 Premier League goals for Ipswich in the 2024/25 season, form that initially attracted Chelsea's interest. Forest manager Oliver Glasner, known for developing strikers, will now be tasked with restoring the player's confidence.
Several other Premier League clubs, including Everton, were also credited with an interest in the England Under-21 international, but Forest's decisive offer won the day. Their previous transfer record was the £37.5 million paid for Omari Hutchison from Ipswich in August 2025.
For Chelsea, the funds from this sale add to the summer's transfer kitty as the club prepares for the next phase of the season.
