Chelsea’s new front three - Morgan Rogers, Cole Palmer and João Pedro - opened the season with a 3-2 Premier League win over Fulham on Monday, giving the club a strong title challenge. Rogers, who joined from Aston Villa for a club record £117m, scored on his debut, while Palmer and João Pedro each found the net.
Front Three Fire
João Pedro opened the scoring after just 31 seconds, lifting his shot past Fulham keeper Bernd Leno for Chelsea’s fastest goal since October 2016. Rogers marked his debut with a close-range finish before half-time, and Palmer added a third goal. The trio’s performance was described by Xabi Alonso as “devastating” and “as good as anything in the Premier League right now.”
Palmer, who has endured a frustrating 18 months of injury problems, returned to the form that impressed in his first season at Stamford Bridge. He matched last season’s Premier League assist tally by setting up João Pedro and was praised for his trickery, creativity and work-rate. “I’m ready and hungry,” Palmer told Sky Sports, noting he is now just two goals away from 50 in the Premier League.
Rogers, who spent the pre-season shortened by England’s World Cup run, looked fit and powerful. He became the first Chelsea player to score on a Premier League debut since Christopher Nkunku in 2023 and the first to create five chances in his first league appearance since records began in 2003-04. His arrival reunites him with Palmer, an ex-Manchester City teammate, and the pair were described as “electric” by former Manchester United defender Gary Neville.
Goalkeeping Concerns
Despite the attacking fireworks, questions remain over goalkeeper Robert Sanchez. He allowed Josh King’s low strike to slip past him for Fulham’s equaliser and then failed to clear a ball that led to Gonzalo García’s header. Sanchez’s errors were highlighted by former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher, who said the team would “never win the league with Sanchez in goal.”
Sanchez’s mistakes were described as “a problem” by Neville, who added that a goalkeeper’s anxiety can undermine everything a team is trying to achieve. Alonso defended Sanchez after the match, stressing collective responsibility and the need for the team to learn from the mistakes.
The Path Forward
Alonso said the club must “sort the goalkeeping issue out” before the season’s end. He also noted that the front three “need to lead the rest” so that the midfield and defence can follow. With the transfer window still open, many fans are asking whether Chelsea need a new first-choice goalkeeper.
The match ended 3-2 in Chelsea’s favour, with the front three scoring and the team showing promise in attack. However, the defensive lapses, particularly in goal, could undermine the club’s title ambitions if not addressed quickly.
