Todd Boehly and Mark Walter are nearing the sale of their stakes in Chelsea FC after talks accelerated, according to a report by the Daily Mirror. The deal, which would see the two co-owners exit the BlueCo consortium that bought the club in May 2022, is described as nearly concluded.
Walter, who also recently agreed to sell his stake in the Los Angeles Lakers, issued a statement on the proposed transaction. "This potential transaction values Mark Walter’s stake in Chelsea Football Club at a premium to his initial investment and is another successful sports investment for him," he said. He added that after the exit he intends to make future sports-related investments. The Mirror reports that Walter, 66, did not initiate the sale process himself.
What does the ownership structure look like?
The BlueCo consortium, led by Clearlake Capital, purchased Chelsea from Roman Abramovich for £2.5 billion with a pledge to invest a further £1.75 billion. Clearlake holds a 61.5% controlling stake in the club. The remaining 38.5% is split equally between Walter, Boehly, and the third founding partner, 90-year-old Hansjorg Wyss, giving each a 12.83% share. It is understood Wyss may choose not to cash out of his holding at this time. The potential sale involves the combined stake held by Boehly and Walter.

Since the takeover, Chelsea have spent over £1.5 billion on new players and cycled through six different permanent managers. The club is now led by Xabi Alonso. The most recent transfer window saw significant activity, with £349 million spent on 11 new signings while 17 players were sold for £382 million, creating a profit. A further 22 players were sent out on loan. This aggressive strategy has been a hallmark of the ownership, though the Daily Mirror notes there have been clashes between Boehly and Clearlake chief Behdad Eghbali over plans, including the potential redevelopment of Stamford Bridge.
