Danny Welbeck scored on his Chelsea debut to help secure a 2-0 Carabao Cup victory over Luton Town at Stamford Bridge. The win, sealed by a late Hakeem Odoffin own goal, gave manager Xabi Alonso his first competitive home success and booked a third-round tie against Leeds United.
Welbeck broke the deadlock in the 50th minute, meeting Malo Gusto's cross with a powerful header. It was a significant moment for the experienced forward, opening his account in his 19th season playing in England. The contest was effectively ended ten minutes from time when a slick run and finish from Estevao was deflected past his own goalkeeper by Odoffin.
Alonso's tactical switch
Alonso named a strong lineup featuring Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers and captain Reece James, and he opted for a 4-2-3-1 formation. This contrasted with the 3-4-3 used in the previous league game and provided a different attacking dimension. Chelsea dominated throughout, creating 26 shots and hitting the woodwork through Rogers just before half-time. Luton, managed by Jack Wilshere, defended resolutely for long periods but saw their 16-match unbeaten run in all competitions come to an end.
After the match, Alonso highlighted the need for patience against deep-lying defences. "We needed to play with patience," the Chelsea manager said. "Luton were defending with heart, they were solid so we knew that if they defend that low, it's not easy." He also praised the Stamford Bridge crowd, adding, "The crowd has been great, we need them for the whole season."
Luton boss Jack Wilshere expressed pride in his League One side's effort. "Proud is the word that comes to mind the most," Wilshere stated. "For as long as Chelsea made us do it, I loved it. I loved how focused we were." He acknowledged the end of their long unbeaten streak, saying, "We don't like losing, we knew it would be difficult but I'm proud of the players."
The result means Chelsea's next fixture in the competition will be at home to Leeds United in early September. Alonso's side return to Premier League action this Sunday, looking to build momentum.
