Arsenal and Chelsea have had a history of doing business, albeit reluctantly. In 2006, Ashley Cole's move from north London to west London was a contentious affair, involving William Gallas as well. Even in 2015, there was significant reluctance from Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho to agree to Petr Cech's transfer, despite owner Roman Abramovich's promise.
By 2018, the dynamics shifted; Arsenal were struggling to qualify for the Champions League, while Chelsea performed better. This led to Olivier Giroud leaving Arsenal for Chelsea with less controversy than Cesc Fabregas' move via Barcelona. Similarly, David Luiz and Willian moved in opposite directions, often providing cover or experience without much cost.
There Are Contenders – But Josh Acheampong Could Be Arsenal's Best Bet to Buy from Chelsea
Chelsea currently has a 41-man squad, with only a few players untouchable. Arsenal needs a left-winger and right-back/centre-back cover. Xabi Alonso, the new manager, mentioned his desire to reduce his collection of centre-backs to four or five.
Players like Malo Gusto, Wesley Fofana, and Trevoh Chalobah are either injured or leaving, while others like Tosin Adarabioyo, Mamadou Sarr, and Aaron Anselmino remain uncertain. This leaves Josh Acheampong as a viable option. At just 20 years old, he can cover both right-back and centre-back roles and fits Arsenal's tactical needs.
The BBC noted in June that Arsenal was among clubs interested in Acheampong. Given the transfer window is nearing its end, this move makes sense for all parties involved. Chelsea needs to offload players before the window closes, while Arsenal can add quality depth and potentially challenge established options like William Saliba and Jurrien Timber within three years.
