Shakhtar's New Home
Shakhtar Donetsk has confirmed that Stamford Bridge will host at least four Champions League group-stage home matches for the 2026/27 season. The Ukrainian side has been unable to play continental fixtures in its own country since Russia’s invasion in 2022, forcing it to use neutral venues across Europe. The move to Stamford Bridge gives the club a familiar setting in West London and a chance to play in a stadium that has hosted European nights for decades.
The arrangement also reflects the historical links between the two clubs. Chelsea have signed former Shakhtar winger Willian and Ukrainian forward Mykhailo Mudryk, both of whom have played for the Ukrainian side. According to The Athletic, Chelsea season-ticket holders will be able to attend Shakhtar’s home matches at reduced prices, offering supporters a chance to experience Champions League football at their own ground.
Stamford Bridge’s capacity of 41,000 will accommodate the Ukrainian club’s fan base, and the venue’s modern facilities meet UEFA requirements for group-stage fixtures. Shakhtar will play four home games, a number that ensures each group opponent faces the Ukrainian side at least once.
Chelsea's European Future
Chelsea finished 10th in the Premier League in the 2025/26 season, lost the FA Cup final to Manchester City, and went through three managers before the appointment of Xabi Alonso. Alonso’s first season will be played without European football, making Champions League qualification a top priority for the 2027/28 campaign.
The Blues’ absence from the 2026/27 Champions League means Stamford Bridge will host European nights without Chelsea taking centre stage. The club will focus on rebuilding under Alonso, who will aim to secure a return to Europe as early as the 2027/28 season.
Joao Pedro's No.9 Shirt
Earlier this year, YEN.com.gh reported that Chelsea have confirmed Joao Pedro will wear the No.9 shirt in the 2026/27 season after previously wearing No.20. The decision has sparked concern among fans because several strikers have struggled while wearing the famous shirt at the club.
