Chelsea FC suffered a damaging 3-0 defeat away to Brentford on Friday, extending their winless run in the Premier League to three matches. The loss leaves them sixth in the table with seven points from four games, now five points behind leaders Arsenal.

Jaidon Anthony broke the deadlock for the hosts in the 61st minute, finishing an assist from Jannik Schuster. Igor Thiago, who had been on a four-game goalless run before kick-off, added a second in the 83rd minute to effectively seal the result. Substitute Fabio Carvalho completed the scoring deep into stoppage time with Brentford's third goal.

Defensive frailties exposed

Chelsea's back line was breached repeatedly, with Maxence Lacroix receiving the lowest individual rating among the starters. The team has now conceded nine goals in their opening four league fixtures, a record that will concern the coaching staff. Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez could do little about any of the three finishes.

In midfield, Jordan Henderson and Pep Chavarria were rated as Chelsea's better performers on a difficult night. Cole Palmer also earned a seven out of ten rating for his efforts in attack, but the Blues failed to convert their possession into clear chances. The absence of top scorer João Pedro, who has three goals this season, was felt keenly.

Igor Thiago acknowledged his recent struggles after ending his drought. "The Brazil international was on a four-game goalless run before kick-off and worked hard but struggled in front of goal," he said. His celebration after scoring, where he removed his shirt, appeared to show a huge sense of relief. A match report noted that "his celebration looked like a weight then lifted off his shoulders, along with his Brentford shirt."

Squad rotation and context

Both managers made multiple changes in the second half. Chelsea introduced Josh Acheampong for Wesley Fofana and Geovany Quenda for Danny Welbeck in the 72nd minute. Brentford's Yehor Yarmoliuk marked his 100th appearance for the club before being replaced by Mamadou Sangare.

The result continues a patchy start to the season for Chelsea, whose recent form reads two wins, one draw and two losses from their last five outings. They followed a 6-3 victory over Leeds with a 2-2 draw against Hull City before this defeat. You can review the team's upcoming schedule on our fixtures page.

With João Pedro and Emmanuel Emegha currently sidelined, the attacking options are limited. The club will need to find a solution quickly ahead of their next match, a home fixture against Bournemouth on 10 October. Chelsea's squad depth will be tested, and fans can check the latest availability on the club's injuries list.
