Former Chelsea FC manager Roberto Di Matteo has urged the Blues to make a statement signing this summer by bringing in Sandro Tonali. The Italian midfielder is set to leave Newcastle United due to the Magpies' failure to qualify for European football. Tonali has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United and Arsenal, but Di Matteo believes Chelsea FC should push harder for the 26-year-old. 'I think he's a class player,' Di Matteo said. 'He's a good age, too. I would love to see him at Chelsea FC. But, for me, their priorities this summer should be in other areas of the pitch.' Tonali has two years left on his contract and is currently valued around £80 million. Chelsea FC will face a major disadvantage in signing Tonali, as Manchester United and Arsenal can offer the Italian midfielder more prospects than the Blues. Tonali has scored 10 goals and registered 10 assists in 110 matches for Newcastle United in all competitions. He was part of the Magpies' team that lifted the 2024-25 Carabao Cup, the club's first trophy since 1969. Chelsea FC will need to decide whether to pursue Tonali if one of their current midfielders leaves the club. The Blues have Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo, Andrey Santos, and Romeo Lavia in their midfield, but Di Matteo believes Tonali would be a valuable addition.
