Sanchez’s Mistakes

Alonso’s Response
After the match, Xabi Alonso defended Sanchez, saying the focus should be on learning rather than blaming individuals. “It’s not about talking about individuals, their situations. It’s about understanding what it takes,” Alonso told reporters. He added that the first goal could be improved but that it was “a process. It’s day one.” Alonso stressed the need for the team to “roll up your sleeves, fight and defend your goal” if they are to win away games, calling the match a good first day for the squad.

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher expressed concern over Chelsea’s defensive record, noting that the goalkeeper issue “will come back to haunt them this season.” He said, “Chelsea will never win the league with Sanchez in goal - impossible.” Gary Neville echoed Carragher’s sentiment, suggesting that an experienced keeper such as Emi Martinez might be needed. Neville warned that a goalkeeper who “makes mistakes and is anxious” undermines the team’s efforts and that Alonso may need to decide in the next seven or eight days to bring in an experienced goalkeeper.
